#Astros Name DeFrancesco as Interim Manager
Brad Mills becomes the fourth consecutive Astros manager to be fired mid-season, with Jimy Williams, Phil Garner, Cecil Cooper going before him. Firing a manager mid-season may be tough, but it was going to happen. I thought Mills was going to be gone before now. Now that it’s done it’s time for the Astros to continue their move into another era.
Earlier this morning the Astros named Tony DeFrancesco (Tony D) as interim manager. Tony D was in his second year as AAA Oklahoma City manager. He’s really led that group of players into the pennant race that they’re in right now. Before being in OKC, Tony D was the Triple A manager for the Oakland A’s farm system. Tony D looks to install a winning mindset in the Astros players. He looks to inspire and and light a fire under the Astros players.
DeFrancesco wants to win. He’ll do whatever it takes. While Tony D isn’t the full time manager for the Astros, he’s having an audition right now. Luhnow’s not going to just look at the wins and losses for the rest of the season when trying to find his new manager. Leadership will be a major factor when looking for the Astros new manager. Tony D knows these players well, and knows how to get the best out of the Astros lineup.
DeFrancesco gave a team speech earlier this morning. Bud Norris game out excited. Said he thought the speech could give the Astros new life. hopefully he’s right. Astros need some energy moving forward. Will Tony D be the Astros manager moving toward the future? No one knows. Luhnow tried to recruit DeFrancesco to St. Louis while he was there. So that has to give DeFrancesco some confidence.
I truly wish Brad Mills, Bobby Meachem, and Mike Barnett the best. Those three guys were great men. They’ll find new jobs soon enough. Believe that. As for DeFrancesco, I hope the best for him. Good luck.
